Join OC Parks at Irvine Ranch Historic Park for Create in the Park!

Embrace the outdoors and capture the beauty of buildings, people, or gardens! Join professional artist Dawn Buckingham as she teaches you how to create from life right in the park.

Dawn will show you how to pack an entire art kit into a single backpack and demonstrate how a quick sketch can serve as the perfect blueprint for a finished painting. Whether you use pencils, ink, markers, or paint, you’ll have the chance to create your own work using your favorite medium.

Artists of all experience levels are welcome to enjoy and draw inspiration from the tranquil grounds, historic structures, fruit orchards, and gardens —stay to paint with the group and share your successes with everyone at the end of the session! A brief guided tour about the history of Irvine Ranch Historic Park will also be included.

This program is designed for ages 8 and older. Materials are not provided, only art instruction. A list of recommended materials will be made available to all registered participants in advance of the program. Sun protection, water and snacks are recommended.

This program is free with free parking, but reservations are required due to limited parking on-site. Please contact the park office at (714) 973-6607 if you have any questions.

Can you tell a tree by its shape?  Most varieties of trees have a shape that is unique. Successful painting or drawing trees often begins with finding the shape rather than drawing branches and leaves.

During this session, you will learn sketching techniques for creating tree shapes. Palms, eucalyptus, fruit trees and others can found at Irvine Ranch. Try one or many and then add them to a watercolor, try painting them or add details to your drawing.  Our professional artist Dawn Buckingham will be there to help you, using the materials that you select.
