Walk and photograph Lakeside Trail in Fremont Canyon. Enjoy the mountain, canyon, and lake views as we hike, at a photographer’s pace, up a steep hill to our final location on Lakeside Road north of Irvine Lake. In just over three short miles we will experience a varied habitat consisting of a creek bottom oak woodland, interesting rock formations, sandstone cliffs, cactus warrens, and the lake.

Although the pace is slow and the distance is short, the hill is steep, so a good pair of walking or hiking shoes and plenty of water are required. Bring your camera equipment, sketchbook, or just enjoy the ride.

Please review the Difficulty Ratings on the brown banner above before registering. Understanding the 1-through-5 ratings system will help you evaluate your readiness to participate in this level-3 activity on the land.

For Families with Children over the age of 12 who would like to join Conservancy Volunteers on a longer slow paced family oriented ride through Sycamores, Oaks, and habitat native to California. The route takes us to The Sinks, OC’s own “Grand Canyon.” Along the way, we will stop and talk about the local habitat and hope to see some of our local native animals and raptors.  The trail includes natural hazards like sand, tree roots, ruts, rocks, dry creek crossings and small hills.

Six months of trail experience is required in which riders have ridden in areas such as Peter’s Canyon, Chino Hills Telegraph Canyon, El Moro Canyon, and Aliso Woods. Riders must be able to ride/walk 8 miles on gradual uphill and downhill terrain. Riders must have your own mountain bike, helmet, 100 oz of water, and snacks.

Parents your child must be able to ride their own bike. Children’s bikes must have front shocks and 20 inch or larger knobby wheels. Please consider that this ride may be difficult for your Child.  Bring spare tubes for your Child’s bikes as well as enough water and snacks for your family. Appropriate mountain bikes have knobby tires, multiple low gears and a front shock. Please do not bring road bikes, beach cruisers, BMX bikes, or attachments to your bike. Elevation gain is approximately 400 ft over 4 miles. Allow 2 – 2.5 hours of riding time.

Please join IRC Community Stewardship Coordinator, Brittany Mendelsohn and IRC Lead Land Steward, Henry DiRocco for the next Land Steward certification course. This course will consist of a classroom session on Thursday March 27th from 6pm – 9pm and a field session on Saturday March 29th from 10am- 3pm. During this course you will learn the history and status of our current projects. In addition, you will be taught the ecology and methodology used to protect and restore the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks. Snacks on the 27th and lunch on the 29th will be provided. The training will provide the skills and confidence needed to assist on all stewardship projects held on the Natural Landmarks.
