Raptor breeding season is approaching and the Irvine Ranch Conservancy (IRC) is seeking volunteers to help monitor nests as part of our long-term raptor nest monitoring program! IRC has once again partnered with raptor biologist Scott Thomas (from Bloom Biological Inc.) to document nest locations, activity, and success across Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks. The data gathered is critical to monitoring the health of our local raptor population, investigating the causes of population fluctuations, and to manage our access to the land accordingly.

This 3.5 hour workshop will provide volunteers with the necessary training to monitor nests safely and effectively. We will cover the goals of the program, the monitoring protocol in detail, how to collect and submit your data, and best management practices. We will be outside for part of the workshop to practice collecting data at an actual raptor nest so please wear trail-appropriate clothing. The intent is to get everyone feeling comfortable and confident with what’s being asked of them.

In order to participate in the program, volunteers are required to commit to at least 4 nest visits, every 3-4 weeks from early March to June. If you are not willing to meet this requirement, then please allow someone else to participate. Participants must also be able and willing to hike several miles to and from a nest location. At this time, the program is only available to IRC volunteers with land steward or lead-land steward status. Birding experience, especially with raptors, is preferred but not required.
