IRC staff, local butterfly enthusiasts, and experts continue to monitor IRC’s butterflies every month! We will be recording number and types of butterflies encountered along the trails of Limestone Canyon. Our butterfly count will provide a benchmark estimate of diversity and number of these beautiful insects to compare to future local surveys and to larger patterns being compiled nationwide. A brand new restoration project is under way! Please come join us as we convert an old ranch road into a single track trail for visitors and wildlife to enjoy! For this event we will be planting and watering native grass plugs and container plants along the new trail sides, providing a beautiful clear path for people as well as important habitat for wildlife. Spend the day working through grassland, coastal sage scrub, and woodland habitats and visit beautiful “Dripping Springs”, a natural water source dripping out of an earthquake fault and then down a gorgeous fern-covered rock face. This unique feature supports many rare plants and animals in the area. Just under 2 miles of trail needs to be restored in the next few months, so your assistance is greatly appreciated! No previous experience is needed for this event.

Ride through historic Weir Canyon and reflect on Orange County’s rich history of transportation trails in this area. This trail is part of the storied trail route that oxen teams traveled on during the 1800s carrying hides to market in San Juan Capistrano. Weir Canyon is home to the largest and healthiest oak woodlands in the county, along with an abundance of rare habitats and wildlife. Enjoy the deep canyons, steep hillsides and great swaths of grasslands, and deep canyons.

You will need to transport your own fit horse to the staging area. Equestrians with trail riding experience, a fit and able horse, and the ability to trailer to the staging area are welcome to join the ride. Owners of unshod horses, please note that footing may include areas of gravel and pavement.
