As America celebrates 250 years as a nation, we will be taking a walk back in time to examine what the past 250 years have looked like at Upper Newport Bay. Join OC Parks staff and volunteers for a guided history walk that will trace the people, events, and environmental transformations that have shaped the Bay. Along the way, participants will discover how the Bay has changed over periods of indigenous stewardship, ranching, agriculture, industry, conservation, and restoration. We will combine local history, ecology, and storytelling to reveal the rich and layered past of one of southern California’s most important coastal wetlands.

Please bring water, snacks, and sun protection as needed. The program is designed for all ages and encourages curiosity, environmental awareness, and appreciation for the outdoors.

The program and parking are free. Adverse weather may cancel the program.

Walk-ups are welcome, but advance registration is recommended.

Join Newport Bay Conservancy Naturalists and our guest guide, artist, educator, and culture bearer Lazaro Arvizu, Jr., for an easy walk exploring our human relationship to our indigenous plant relatives. We will strengthen our connection to nature by discussing the importance of respect, recognition, and reciprocity from an Indigenous knowledge perspective.

We’ll use our senses to interact with and sample edible native plants as we unearth a new understanding of their value, sustainability, and nutrition.

Lastly, following a short discussion on plant economy, you’ll receive Native Seeds to highlight the practice of plant-gifting as a way to nurture a relationship with our plant-relatives.

Advance registration required.
